Following previous consultation across the congregation, the District Church Council at its July 2002 meeting voted by a two thirds majority (10-4) for a change in the present policy relating to admittance to Communion.
At the September 2002 meeting a further vote was taken on the specific nature of the change. Either for those who have been baptised to receive communion solely on the basis of their baptism or for there to be some form of instruction before communion is received. The vote was in favour of '..from baptism..'
It was decided that from Christmas Day 2002 all those who had been baptised would be welcome to receive bread and wine.
The deliberations and process in coming to this position have been challenging and productive. May we continue to pray that we will be sensitive to the prompting of God's Spirit within the life of St. Matthew's
